Rainbow PUSHes Foreclosure Alternatives, Business Development and Youth Engagement at Southern Regional Conference Conference Theme:  Revival, Recovery and Renewal Conference Co-Chairs:  Xernona Clayton and Frank Ski

The Rainbow PUSH Coalition and the Citizenship Education will host their 10th Annual Creating Opportunity Conference in Atlanta, October 15-16 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, 265 Peachtree Street.  The purpose of the conference is to revive hope for those devastated by job and home loss, recover from the economic calamity with new investments in industry and infrastructure, and renew efforts to create a level playing field for workers and children.

Lenders will be on-site at the conference to offer alternatives to foreclosure.  Rainbow PUSH successfully urged Citi Mortgage and Wells Fargo to withdraw hundreds of homes from the September Sheriff’s sale.  Without Rainbow PUSH intervention, those homes would have gone into foreclosure.  Those families are urged to come to the conference to meet face to face with lenders and mortgage counselors.

Now, the task is to find longer-term solutions. Rev. Jackson led a picket in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.  Rainbow’s One Thousand Churches Connected also hosted a meeting at Antioch Baptist Church with national and local clergy while Jackson was in Atlanta on Monday, September 7, only one day before the First Tuesday Sherriff’s sale.  The Sheriff’s sale  takes place in each of Georgia 159 counties every month.

Small business owners will get a bird’s eye view of how the stimulus works from some of the largest public and private players including MARTA, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, CSX Railroad, Georgia Power Co., Georgia DOT, Fluor, Inc.and Savannah Port Authority. Federal investment is designed to spur economic recovery, but without participation by unemployed persons, underutilized firms the stimulus cannot achieve its purpose.  According to Rev. Jackson, “we cannot just water the leaves, we must also stimulate the roots to revive the economy.”

“We included Constitutional Law Update because the law defines the freedoms, obligations and rights enjoyed by all Americans,” according to Janice L. Mathis. The session will review recent federal case law involving voting rights, diversity and inclusion and consumer rights.  We are pleased to be able to offer CLE credits for lawyers. Participants include Loretta King, Acting Assistant Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice and the Hon. Lisa Madigan, Illinois Attorney General

On Saturday, a new generation of leaders takes the stage to discuss solutions to issues that uniquely impact young people, including Hip-hop culture and student financial aid.  More than 500 young people from across the region will participate.

Also on Saturday will be a public policy roundtable during the conference for elected officials including S.C. Representative Dave Mack, Mayor Shirley Franklin, Vanessa Williams, Executive Director of National Conference of Black Mayors and Hon. Willie Burns of the Georgia Conference of Black Mayors.

The Conference also features workshops on Women and Wealth, featuring representatives from North Carolina Mutual and SunTrust Bank.  and Going Green – an environmentally conscious investing session.  A new event this year will be the Clark Atlanta University Business Case Competition.

The following persons will be honored for their contributions to civic and economic life during the Keep Hope Alive Gala:  Vicki Palmer, retired Coca-Cola Enterprises Executive Vice President; Congressman John Lewis; Sweet Auburn advocate Charles Johnson; civil rights activist Gail P. Davenport; Georgia Informer Publisher Herbert Dennard; Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and CNN commentator Roland Martin.

Among the notables on hand to congratulate the honorees will be V-103’s Frank Ski and  Wanda Smith, Trumpet Awards Chairman Xernona Clayton, Atlanta Life President Bill Clements, Montgomery businessman Greg Calhoun, African Ascension founder Joe Beasley..  Musiq Soul Child, Indigo and the Jean Childs Young Middle School Jazz Band will perform.  The Keep Hope Alive Gala celebrates Rev.
