Response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!

 

 

ATLANTA (January 28, 2010)--In his State of the Union address, President Obama outlined a both ambitious and impressive legislative agenda for the next year.  From student loan reform, to healthcare and nuclear nonproliferation; Obama set out his vision for not only what American could be, but also for what he intended to do.  With the soaring rhetoric of a nation under siege coming together to face the challenges ahead, Obama inspired, compelled and led the charge for this nation going forward. 
 

            But we have heard all of this before.  America was subject to a two year campaign of hope and change.  A two year campaign premised upon the ideal of nation united to stare down our challenges and become the republic our founders intended.  We, as a nation, were to cast aside the political common knowledge and stand up for an opportunity to create the America we were promised.  The only problem is that we have yet to see results.
 

            I fully understand that our challenges are great and that President Obama has had only a year to attempt to solve many of the greatest issues of this or any generation.  But what the President has lacked is the effrontery, gumption or temerity to deliver the change that we believed in.  The President has approached the office detached from the political reality of a nation divided along entrenched party lines, not governed by logic, but rather governed by fear and demagoguery.  What America needs is not a Professor but a knife fighter.  We don’t need a new Kennedy, we need a new Johnson.  We need a President who is willing to take bold actions without regard for their success or failure, who will stand on principles not polls, who lives out the audacity of hope and builds the nation not just that we deserve, but that we must have.
 

            “THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is [this] dearness only that gives everything its value.”
 

            So as we enter this second year of the Obama administration we must demand that he MAKE IT HAPPEN! He has majorities in both houses, if the Republican’s threaten to filibuster then tell them to do it.  Let the American people see in the light of day who is stopping the reforms that he wants and let them decide if they really want change.  If the Blue Dog Democrats will not go along with his agenda then go to their districts and get them replaced.  If he must pass every vote in the Senate by one vote in reconciliation then do it and be prepared to take the consequences of failure.
 

            This is a once in a generation opportunity to fundamentally alter the fabric of America.  Much like the Reagan revolutions shaping of the National landscape over the past 30 years, Obama has a chance to guide the American agenda over the next quarter century.  The only question is can he Make it happen? I say, let’s make him!
