Rainbow PUSH
Atlanta is
deeply
sorrowful
for the loss
of our
“Leader”,
Rev. Dr.
James
Orange. He
was known
for his
trademark
greeting,
Hey
leader.” To
me and many
others that
greeting
symbolized
his
acceptance
that
everyone who
serves can
lead. He
respected
everyone who
was willing
to give of
themselves
to make the
community
(and the
world)
better.
Rev. Orange’s ability to mobilize people is
legendary.
I came to
believe that
the secret
of his great
gift was his
own
generosity.
You could
not say “no”
to Rev.
Orange
because he
never said
no to a good
cause.
Faced with
the daunting
task of
planning and
executing a
demonstration
in support
of
reauthorization
of the
Voting
Rights Act
in 2005, I
turned to
Rev.
Orange.
Without
hesitation
he gave
unstintingly
of his time,
wisdom and
contacts.
He had other great gifts – among them were honesty,
humility and
humor. He
was not
afraid to
call a spade
a spade.
Yet, his
humor and
humility
allowed us
to accept
his wisdom
without
rancor. I
loved the
way that
Rev. Orange
cared for
his family –
and the way
they
obviously
cared for
him. He
loved his
children,
but he did
more than
that. He
welcomed
them into
the causes
and concerns
to which he
devoted his
life.
We shall miss him. I also hope we will emulate him.
